Gearbox CEO's Promise: Making a Dying Fan's Dream Come True

Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old battling terminal cancer, expressed his desire to experience Borderlands 4 before his passing via a Reddit post. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, Caleb's plea resonated deeply with the Borderlands community. His love for the series and his wish to play the upcoming 2025 release touched many hearts.

McAlpine's heartfelt request didn't go unheard. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responded on X (formerly Twitter), pledging to make every effort to grant Caleb's wish. Pitchford assured McAlpine that they were actively working towards a solution and have since been in direct communication.

However, with no concrete date set, the game remains over a year away, a timeframe unfortunately unavailable to McAlpine. His GoFundMe page reveals a grim prognosis of 7-12 months, possibly extending to two years with successful treatment.

Despite his prognosis, McAlpine maintains a positive outlook, drawing strength from his faith. His GoFundMe campaign, aiming to cover medical expenses, has already garnered significant support.

Gearbox's History of Supporting Fans

Borderlands 4 Early Access Granted to Terminally Ill FanThis isn't the first time Gearbox has demonstrated compassion for its fans. In 2019, they provided an early copy of Borderlands 3 to Trevor Eastman, another fan battling cancer. Sadly, Eastman passed away later that year, but his memory lives on through the in-game legendary weapon, the Trevonator, named in his honor.

Borderlands 4 Early Access Granted to Terminally Ill FanAnother touching example is the tribute to Michael Mamaril, a Borderlands fan who passed away in 2011. His friend's request for a Claptrap tribute in Borderlands 2 resulted in an NPC named after Mamaril, rewarding players with high-quality items and a unique achievement.

Gearbox's commitment to its community is evident. While Borderlands 4's release date remains uncertain, the company's actions demonstrate a dedication to making the game a cherished experience for its fans. Pitchford's statement regarding "massive ambitions" for Borderlands 4 reassures fans that the game will be a worthy addition to the beloved series.

Further details on Borderlands 4 are awaited. In the meantime, fans can add the game to their Steam wishlist to stay updated on the release.
