Hulu may be ready to stake another claim in the vampire-hunting world. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is nearing fruition at Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer and may include Gellar's return.
The original series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Aided by friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles, Buffy battled demons and vampires for seven seasons (1997-2003). The Buffy universe continued through the Angel spin-off and subsequent comic books.
