Sid Meier's Civilization VII ushers in a new era for the iconic turn-based strategy series, available across major gaming platforms. This guide clarifies its cross-play and cross-progression capabilities.
Cross-Play:
Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. Players need an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. Cross-play functions seamlessly across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, offering full map and player count options.
However, including a Nintendo Switch player restricts gameplay. The Switch version has limitations on map size (cannot support standard or larger maps) and player counts (up to four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, six in the Modern Age). Therefore, cross-play sessions involving a Switch will adhere to these reduced parameters. While playable on Switch, these limitations should be considered, especially in online multiplayer.
Cross-Progression:
Unlike the nuanced cross-play, Civilization VII's cross-progression is straightforward. With an active 2K account, progress is synced across all linked platforms. This means game saves are consistent across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and other platforms, eliminating the need to restart on each device.
This feature, absent in Civilization VI at launch but added later, reflects modern gaming habits. Firaxis Games and 2K have integrated cross-progression from the start, ensuring consistent gameplay whether on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
