Following fan backlash over the exclusivity of New Game Plus in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has announced a different approach for its upcoming title, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. The New Game Plus mode for this Hawaiian pirate adventure, a sequel to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, will be available as a free post-launch update.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, despite critical acclaim and award nominations, faced criticism for restricting New Game Plus access to its most expensive editions. RGG Studio, however, has learned from this controversy. A recent Like a Dragon Direct showcased gameplay, including naval combat and crew management, and concluded with the announcement of the game's editions. Crucially, it confirmed that New Game Plus would be freely accessible via a future patch. While a specific release date for the update wasn't provided, the studio's decision to offer it for free is a welcome change.
The practice of locking significant gameplay features, such as game modes, behind expensive editions has drawn considerable criticism. RGG Studio's decision to avoid this with Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii demonstrates a responsiveness to player feedback. While a post-launch addition means a delay for players eager to experience New Game Plus, the extended playtime offered by the main game should bridge the gap until the update arrives.
With the game's release date set for February 21st, RGG Studio is expected to unveil further details in the coming weeks. Fans are encouraged to monitor the studio's social media channels for updates leading up to the launch.
