Firaxis will change Civilization 7 after a barrage of criticism

Following a less-than-stellar launch, the developers of Civilization VII are committed to significant improvements. Firaxis Games acknowledges player feedback regarding the user interface and gameplay, and is actively working on solutions.

Currently holding a 47% positive rating on Steam, the game's criticisms center not on core mechanics, but on a simplified interface, missing features, and a perceived lack of content. In response, Firaxis has prioritized interface enhancements, focusing on improved map readability, refined menus, and a more intuitive user experience.

Upcoming additions include:

  • Multiplayer team functionality.
  • New map types.
  • Customization options (renaming religions and cities).

A balance update (1.1.0) with further improvements is slated for release in March. The full game launch is scheduled for February 11th.

Many reviewers feel the game launched prematurely and requires substantial further development. The $70 price point has been heavily criticized as not reflecting the game's current state. The hope among long-time fans is that Firaxis will address these concerns through substantial updates, restoring the series' renowned quality and attention to detail. The expectation is that Civilization VII will eventually live up to the high standards set by previous installments.
