"Back to the Future" Writer Rules Out Prequels, Sequels

by Hunter Dec 07,2025

According to its screenwriter, we will "never" see another Back to the Future film, series, or any other addition to the franchise.

Rumors began circulating after the creators of Cobra Kai, a TV sequel to The Karate Kid films, mentioned the possibility of a Back to the Future TV show.

However, Bob Gale, who co-wrote the Robert Zemeckis-directed Back to the Future trilogy, has firmly stated that the series will not continue.

"I don't understand why this keeps coming up!" he told People. "Do they think repeating it will somehow make it happen?"

"In every interview, people ask, 'Bob, when are we getting Back to the Future 4?' Never. 'What about a prequel?' Never. 'A spinoff?' Never. The movies are great as they are. They aren't flawless, but as Bob Zemeckis often said, 'They’re perfect enough.'"

Of course, this is only Bob Gale's opinion. If Hollywood decided to move forward with a Back to the Future revival, corporate power would likely have the final say. However, executive producer Steven Spielberg would also need to approve, which Gale believes is improbable.

"If some massive corporation threatened, 'Agree to this or we’ll harm your family'—well, obviously no one wants that," he quipped.

"But Steven Spielberg must also authorize it. Just as he won’t allow another E.T., he fully respects our decision against more Back to the Future content. He understands and supports that stance. Thank you, Steven."

Gale's remarks are consistent with his earlier responses regarding a potential Back to the Future revival. In February, he had a blunt message for fans hoping for Back to the Future 4: "When people ask, 'When are you making Back to the Future 4?' We respond, 'F**k you.'"
