F-Zero Climax, a Japan-Exclusive GBA Racing Game, Added to Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds two classic F-Zero GBA racers!

Get ready for high-speed thrills! Nintendo has announced the arrival of F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, launching October 11th, 2024.

These classic Game Boy Advance racing titles are finally available to a wider audience. F-Zero: GP Legend, a global release from 2004, joins the previously Japan-only F-Zero Climax, released in 2004. This marks the first time F-Zero Climax will be playable outside of Japan.

The F-Zero series, a futuristic racing franchise, debuted in Japan in 1990 and quickly gained acclaim for its innovative gameplay and high-speed action. Its influence can be seen in other racing games, such as SEGA's Daytona USA. Known for pushing the boundaries of console technology, F-Zero titles were celebrated for their blistering pace, particularly on SNES.

Like Mario Kart, F-Zero features intense racing with track obstacles and competitive battles between racers' unique "F-Zero machines." The series' iconic protagonist, Captain Falcon, is also a familiar face in the Super Smash Bros. series.

F-Zero: GP Legend saw its initial release in 2003 in Japan, followed by a worldwide launch in 2004. F-Zero Climax, however, remained a regional exclusive until now, marking a 19-year gap since its release and preceding the recent release of the Switch's F-Zero 99. In a past interview, F-Zero designer Takaya Imamura cited the immense popularity of Mario Kart as a contributing factor to the series' extended hiatus.

With the October 2024 update, Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers can experience the exhilarating races of F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend, competing in Grand Prix, story modes, and various time trials.
