God of War TV Series' Creative Team Gets Revamp

The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative overhaul. Several key producers have departed, leading to a complete reboot of the project. Read on for details on the departures and the future plans of Sony and Amazon.

The Show is Not Cancelled

Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the God of War adaptation. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.

However, key figures remain attached. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio Creative Director), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio) will continue as executive producers. Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Crucially, the project remains uncancelled.

Looking Ahead Despite Setbacks

Initially announced on a PlayStation podcast in 2022, following the success of the 2018 God of War reboot, the Amazon and Sony collaboration reflects Sony's broader strategy of adapting its popular video game franchises. This initiative, spearheaded by PlayStation Productions (founded in 2019), has already yielded several successful projects.

These include the 2022 Uncharted film, the highly acclaimed 2023 The Last of Us series (with a second season slated for 2025), the 2023 Gran Turismo movie, and this year's Twisted Metal series. Furthermore, several other adaptations are in development, including Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film, set for release on April 25, 2025. The Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation with Netflix is also underway.
