The narrative of Warhammer 40,000 is a lumbering leviathan. Games Workshop's scribes often take years to nudge the overarching plot forward. Consider the return of the beloved Primarch, Lion El'Jonson, announced in March 2023. Over two years later, the character has yet to make a significant impact on the setting; his eagerly awaited reunion with his brother, Roboute Guilliman, seems more distant than ever.
Tantalizing narrative threads are left dangling, sometimes for decades. Answers remain maddeningly elusive. Cliffhangers appear destined to linger in a perpetual state of anticipation. Such is the nature of the grimdark 41st millennium, which has surged in popularity over the last decade. Now, any hint of narrative progression is scrutinized with Inquisitorial intensity.
That brings us to a recent Facebook post by celebrated Black Library author Dan Abnett. As perhaps the most prominent Warhammer 40,000 writer today, Abnett is central to the setting's evolution. His extensive bibliography established much of the lore fans cherish, including the acclaimed Gaunt's Ghosts and Eisenhorn series, and pivotal entries in the epic Horus Heresy saga.
Let's focus on Eisenhorn, the source of the latest speculation. This sci-fi crime trilogy follows Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, the latter of whom received his own spin-off. The core premise involves hunting heretics and daemons while resisting the mind-breaking powers of Chaos. While set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, its scope is more focused and intimate than galaxy-spanning tales of endless void battles and legions of Space Marines.
The Eisenhorn saga includes a spin-off series centered on an Inquisitorial agent named Alizebeth Bequin. The first Bequin novel, *Pariah*, arrived in 2012. Its sequel, the lore-rich *Penitent*, followed nearly a decade later in March 2021. The highly anticipated third installment, *Pandaemonium*, lacks a release date, and the wait for news is fast becoming Warhammer 40,000's equivalent of George R.R. Martin's elusive *The Winds of Winter*.
Why does *Pandaemonium* matter so much to lore enthusiasts? Because it promises genuine plot progression. *Penitent* concluded with a major lore revelation (concerning the mysterious King in Yellow, which we won't spoil here), meaning *Pandaemonium*'s ramifications could be immense. Fans are eager for the next chapter and persistently urge Abnett to finish it.
This brings us to Abnett's recent, seemingly innocuous Facebook post promoting his appearance at the Broadside Games Show in Gillingham, Kent. It included a pointed note:
By the way… my previous posts about this event (and, actually, pretty much anything I post) have resulted in many comments asking for Pandaemonium (Bequin book 3). Positively demanding it. And I’m delighted you’re keen, because so am I. But for those who don’t know, it is not MY decision when Pandaemonium gets finished and published. For reasons an NDA prevents me from discussing, Bequin 3 — and some other things — are held up for a while. It’s coming — and I’ll be delighted to bring it to you — but in the meantime, try to be patient… and maybe try to enjoy the things that I AM writing.
This message was brought to you by peace, love, and shooty-death-kill-in-space. See you Saturday.
Abnett is bound by a non-disclosure agreement regarding the delays for *Pandaemonium* and "some other things." That alone might not raise eyebrows, but combined with a Reddit post from March, it fuels significant speculation.
Three months ago, Redditor Zigoia recounted a meeting with Abnett at a book signing in Maidstone, Kent. Zigoia reported that Abnett said the delay was due to the book's potential major impact on the setting. According to the account, Games Workshop wants the lore for an upcoming TV show fully settled first, to avoid contradictions with *Pandaemonium*'s potentially galaxy-shaking events.
The TV show! This refers to Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe, stemming from a deal between Games Workshop and Amazon. It's an exciting prospect, amplified by Cavill's well-known passion for the franchise. Cavill is set to star and serve as an executive producer, guiding the project much like the Emperor guides humanity through the Warp.
We know almost nothing about the adaptation's specifics: the characters, setting, or timeline. Who will Cavill play? It's unknown, but fans frequently suggest Eisenhorn from Abnett's saga as a perfect fit.
Given this context, it's clear why Abnett would be entangled in NDAs. If *Pandaemonium* is delayed to align Amazon's adaptations with established canon, ensuring consistency for both veterans and newcomers, its revelations must wait.
Unfortunately for lore fans, this likely means an even longer wait for *Pandaemonium*. When Games Workshop confirmed the Amazon deal in December 2024, it stated a synopsis and story order were in place but warned it would be "some years" before the first project screens. This may explain why the overarching narrative feels stalled, with only minor developments to sustain fans until *Pandaemonium* potentially rewrites the rules.
To bridge the gap, let's speculate. Does Abnett's NDA hint that Amazon and Cavill are adapting his Eisenhorn series? Its tighter, more focused scope might make it a more feasible adaptation than a massive saga like the Horus Heresy, which would require a *Rings of Power*-level budget.
If Amazon and Cavill have chosen Eisenhorn, Abnett may be involved, explaining Games Workshop's secrecy. Perhaps Cavill *is* set to play Eisenhorn, as many hope. Just this week, Cavill mentioned enjoying the challenge of adapting what he called the "tricky" and "very complex" Warhammer 40,000. Bringing Eisenhorn to life could be a central part of that challenge.
