While NieR: Automata primarily focuses on the epic clash between Androids and Machines, the game offers a variety of peaceful activities to explore. One such activity is fishing, which you can easily overlook during your playthrough if you choose to.
Although fishing won't help you level up directly, it's a fantastic way to acquire rare items and earn money quickly without the need to engage in combat. Here's your guide to fishing in NieR: Automata and how to make the most of your catches.
Fishing in NieR: Automata is accessible in almost any body of water, even shallow areas like those outside the Resistance Camp. When you stand still in water, a prompt to start fishing will appear above your character. Holding down the indicated button will position your character to cast their pod and begin fishing. The fishing mechanic is straightforward, using just one button to cast and reel in:
After casting your pod into the water, it will wait until something nibbles at the bait. You'll notice the pod bobbing up and down, but hold off on reeling in just yet. Wait for the pod to be fully submerged with an audible plop, then quickly press the reel-in button. You have about a second to react; otherwise, the fish will escape, and you'll need to recast. Feel free to cast and recast as many times as you want—there are no limits, so enjoy fishing to your heart's content and collect as many fish or junk items as you desire.
To make fishing even easier, you can equip a plug-in chip that displays a fishing icon in the top right corner of your screen whenever you're standing in fishable water.
Whether you're casting your line in a serene pond or the murky sewers, the fish and junk items you catch can be sold for a good sum of money. This method is one of the safest and quickest ways to earn money early in the game, especially useful for those looking to increase their plug-in chip capacity. If you're fishing in the sewers, you might even snag an Iron Pipe, which can be one of the game's better weapons, depending on your luck.
