Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the remastered Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," promising a revitalized experience for fans.
A New Era for the Ninja Gaiden Franchise
Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks a significant return to the franchise after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the series' signature blend of brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay. The partnership with Xbox is a natural progression, given their historical collaboration on titles like Dead or Alive and the original Xbox 360 release of Ninja Gaiden 2.
Introducing Yakumo: A New Protagonist
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to master his skills and become a true Master Ninja. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the epitome of ninja mastery. Yuji Nakao, Producer and Director from PlatinumGames, explains the decision to introduce a new protagonist: to broaden the series' appeal to new players while ensuring long-time fans remain engaged. Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the story, serving as a formidable challenge and mentor for Yakumo. Rest assured, Ryu will also be playable.
Evolved Combat: Raven Style and Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature breakneck speed and brutal combat. Yakumo boasts two distinct fighting styles: Raven Style and the new Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style. Team Ninja's Director, Masazaku Hirayama, assures fans that despite the differences, the action remains true to the Ninja Gaiden spirit. PlatinumGames' influence is evident in the enhanced speed and dynamic combat.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic
In addition to the new title, a remake of Ninja Gaiden 2, titled Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and is included with Xbox Game Pass. This version includes additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, providing a satisfying experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.
The future of Ninja Gaiden is bright, promising a thrilling return to form and a fresh perspective for a new generation of players.
