Bethesda has officially stated that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include support for official mods. However, this hasn't deterred the passionate fanbase, who have already begun releasing a variety of unofficial mods.
Just hours after the surprise launch of Oblivion Remastered by Bethesda and Virtuos for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a selection of community-created mods appeared on the popular platform, Nexus Mods. While these early mods primarily offer minor customization features, they demonstrate the unwavering dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community.
At the time of writing, an impressive 22 mods were already available on the site. The first mod to be released allows PC users to customize their desktop by swapping out the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut with one featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Other mods enable players to bypass the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Additionally, there are mods that adjust gameplay elements, such as one that modifies the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that removes the in-game compass.
These early mods surfaced despite Bethesda's announcement that Oblivion Remastered would not support official modding. The company clarified this in an FAQ section on their website, directing players to seek mods from other sources.
One notable modder, GodschildGaming, uploaded an Iron Longsword damage mod to Nexus Mods to demonstrate that modding Oblivion Remastered is indeed possible. In the mod's description, they stated, "This is just to prove modding is possible. Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept."
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was released today, marking 19 years since the original game's launch. As more players dive into the remastered version in the coming weeks and months, the modding community is expected to expand the range of available mods, offering increasingly creative ways to personalize the game. In the meantime, you can explore discussions on whether the release should be considered a remake rather than a remaster and Bethesda's rationale for labeling it as "Remastered."
