Meridiem Games, Omori's European publisher, has announced the cancellation of the game's physical release for Nintendo Switch and PS4 in Europe. The publisher cited technical challenges related to multilingual European localization as the reason for the cancellation.
A String of Postponements Leads to Cancellation
The physical release, initially slated for March 2023, faced multiple delays, shifting to December 2023, then March 2024, and finally to January 2025. These repeated postponements ultimately resulted in the decision to cancel the European physical release altogether. While Meridiem Games remained tight-lipped about the specific localization issues, the news has understandably left many fans disappointed.
Pre-orders placed through retailers like Amazon were impacted, with customers receiving notifications of the further delays and, eventually, the cancellation. The inability to obtain a physically released copy in native European languages is a significant blow, especially considering this would have been the first official release in languages like Spanish. European players still have the option to import a US version, but this lacks official local language support.
Omori, an RPG centered around Sunny, a young boy grappling with trauma, seamlessly blends reality and his dream world, where he adopts the persona of Omori. Initially launched on PC in December 2020, the game expanded to Switch, PS4, and Xbox in 2022. However, the Xbox version was subsequently removed due to an inappropriate T-shirt design previously sold by OMOCAT.
