PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Home Run

A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising entry.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience shows in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive course roster (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, were easily overlooked.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both casual and challenging experiences, with options for forgiving or precise shot control. The ability to adjust tee shots laterally is a welcome addition. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, such as a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further affects performance. The addition of weekly Quests adds replayability.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, offered sufficient customization. Skill trees provide further depth. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it less spectacular, but also consistently solid. Golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing game will likely find it worthwhile. A playable demo is currently available.
