Valve's SteamOS 3.6.9 Beta Update: Expanding Horizons for Handheld Gaming
Valve's recent SteamOS update, codenamed "Megafixer," marks a significant step towards broader device compatibility, particularly for third-party handhelds like the ASUS ROG Ally. This update, currently available in Beta and Preview channels for the Steam Deck, includes crucial support for ROG Ally keys.
Enhanced Third-Party Device Support
The inclusion of ROG Ally key support is noteworthy. It's the first time Valve has explicitly acknowledged supporting a competitor's hardware in their patch notes, suggesting a wider vision for SteamOS beyond the Steam Deck.
Valve's Vision: SteamOS Across Multiple Devices
Valve's long-term goal of expanding SteamOS beyond the Steam Deck has been confirmed by designer Lawrence Yang. While full SteamOS deployment on non-Steam Deck hardware isn't imminent, this update demonstrates substantial progress.
This commitment reflects Valve's aim to create an open and adaptable gaming platform. Although ASUS hasn't officially endorsed SteamOS for the ROG Ally, this update represents a major milestone in achieving this vision.
Reshaping the Handheld Gaming Landscape
Previously, the ROG Ally functioned primarily as a controller within the Steam ecosystem. This update lays the groundwork for potentially running SteamOS directly on the Ally and other similar devices. The "extra support" for ROG Ally keys ensures better key mapping and functionality within Steam. While YouTuber NerdNest reports that full functionality isn't yet realized, even with the update, it's a critical step.
This could signal a significant shift in handheld gaming, potentially making SteamOS a viable operating system for various handheld consoles. While immediate functionality remains unchanged, this update points towards a more versatile and inclusive SteamOS ecosystem.
