Sony reportedly plans a return to the handheld gaming console market, a move that could shake up the industry. Long-time gaming fans will recall Sony's previous forays into portable gaming with the PlayStation Portable and Vita. While still in early development stages, according to Bloomberg (via Gamedeveloper), a new portable console is being considered to rival Nintendo's Switch.
The report cites sources "familiar with the matter," suggesting the project is in its infancy. Sony may ultimately decide against releasing the console. This potential resurgence comes after a period where mobile gaming largely eclipsed dedicated handhelds, leading many companies, including Sony, to withdraw from the market. Despite the Vita's popularity, the rise of smartphones seemed to outweigh the perceived benefits of competing directly.
A Changing Landscape
However, recent trends indicate a shift. The success of the Nintendo Switch, along with the Steam Deck and other similar devices, shows a renewed interest in dedicated portable gaming. Furthermore, advancements in mobile device technology have increased their capabilities, potentially making a dedicated handheld console more appealing to consumers seeking a higher-quality gaming experience on the go. This improved mobile technology may be the catalyst persuading Sony that a dedicated handheld market exists, and that there's a dedicated audience willing to invest in such a device.
