GameStop Switch 2 Stapler Auction Hits $100K

by Nathan Dec 08,2025

GameStop is auctioning its notorious stapler that damaged multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles during launch night. All proceeds will benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, with current bids surpassing $100,000.

The eBay listing includes the infamous stapler, a certificate of authenticity, and the first refurbished Switch 2 unit with stapler-damaged screen (now fully functional), complete with its original puncture-marked packaging.

"Though regrettable, we hope this incident creates lasting positive impact," stated GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen. After pledging to include his underwear should bids reach six figures, Cohen confirmed its addition to the auction package.

The controversy began last month when customers reported Switch 2 screens punctured by receipt-attaching staplers. Most incidents occurred at GameStop's Staten Island location, where affected consoles were promptly replaced.

While GameStop turned the mishap into humorous social media promotion for new Switch 2 stock, it raised questions about Nintendo's packaging design. The console's screen sits unprotected against thin cardboard with only minimal plastic wrapping. IGN contacted Nintendo regarding potential packaging changes but received no response.

The certificate of authenticity memorializes the stapler as "an authentic artifact from the 'Staplegate' incident" where an overzealous employee repeatedly stapled receipts to consoles.

"This retired stapler bears witness marks from its brief but memorable service, becoming retail legend through impulsive actions during launch night chaos," reads the description. The auction currently stands at $108,895.
