by Claire Apr 11,2025

As you progress through your journey in *Avowed*, you'll inevitably face higher-level enemies. To remain effective in combat, upgrading your gear to match or surpass these adversaries is crucial. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to upgrade weapons and armor in *Avowed*.

Where to Upgrade Weapons and Armor in Avowed

In *Avowed*, the hub for upgrading your weapons and armor is the Workbench, as shown in the image above. Each upgrade requires specific materials, which vary depending on the type of weapon or armor and its Quality. While most materials are readily available in the game world or can be crafted, upgrading a weapon from one Quality to another requires increasingly rare forms of Adra.

Workbenches are located at Party Camps, which you can set up at any Adra Waystone found within the game world. To establish a Party Camp, interact with an Adra Waystone and select the option to set it up. Once established, these camps are marked on your map with a tent icon, allowing you to fast travel to them easily.

How Weapon and Armor Leveling Works in Avowed

In *Avowed*, the power of your weapons and armor is tracked in two primary ways: Quality and additional upgrades. Quality is defined by a numerical value, color rarity, and an adjective that describes the item's Quality. These levels correspond to the enemies you'll encounter in the Living Lands of *Avowed*. Using gear with a lower Quality than that of your enemies will make you less effective in combat.

When facing enemies whose level exceeds your gear's Quality, you'll find that your weapons deal less damage, and your armor offers less protection. However, gear provides bonuses when used against enemies of the same or lower level. Therefore, upgrading your weapons and armor to keep pace with enemy leveling is essential for staying competitive in combat. Here's a breakdown of the weapon qualities in *Avowed*:

  • Common Quality – Green, Level I
  • Fine Quality – Blue, Level II
  • Exceptional – Purple, Level III
  • Superb – Red, Level IV
  • Legendary – Gold, Level V

Within each Quality level, you can further upgrade your weapons and armor up to three additional times, marked as +0 through +3. These upgrades enhance the stats of your gear, though not as dramatically as increasing the Quality. Importantly, you must complete all three additional upgrades before you can elevate the Quality of your weapon.

Avowed Weapon and Armor Additional Upgrades Explained

Each Quality level of gear allows for three additional upgrade tiers. These upgrades, while less impactful than a Quality increase, still provide valuable stat boosts to your weapons and armor. To move to a higher Quality, you must first max out these additional upgrades.

Which Weapons and Armor Should You Upgrade in Avowed?

In *Avowed*, weapons and armor are categorized into standard and Unique types. Standard gear is widely available, either as loot or for purchase from Merchants. Unique gear, on the other hand, consists of named, special items typically obtained through Main or Side Quests, or by defeating bosses or bounties. Some Merchants may also sell select Unique items.

Unique weapons and armor can be upgraded to Legendary Quality, a level beyond the Superb Quality cap for standard gear. Additionally, Unique gear comes with extra bonuses and perks, making them far superior to standard gear. As such, it's advisable to focus your resources on upgrading Unique weapons and armor. Standard gear should be treated as temporary and disposable, used until you acquire and upgrade better Unique items. Selling or breaking down standard gear to acquire resources for Unique upgrades is the best strategy.

And that's how to upgrade weapons and armor in *Avowed*. By following these guidelines, you'll be well-equipped to handle the challenges ahead in the Living Lands.
