Xbox has finally reinstated the friend request system, much to the delight of its player base. This highly anticipated feature, absent for a decade, returns to the platform, offering gamers more control over their online interactions.
The announcement, made via blog post and X (formerly Twitter), marks a significant shift from the "follow" system implemented on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton stated, "We’re thrilled to announce the return of friend requests. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility."
The previous "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the direct connection and control that friend requests provide. The lines between friends and casual followers often blurred, leaving many users wanting a more refined social experience.
While the "follow" function remains for one-way connections, the return of friend requests allows for more intentional friendships. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system. Microsoft emphasizes its commitment to user privacy, introducing new settings to manage friend requests, followers, and notifications, all accessible within the Xbox settings menu.
The news has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback on social media. Users celebrate the return of a familiar and desired feature, highlighting the frustrations of the previous system. While some players were unaware of the absence of friend requests, the overall sentiment is one of relief and excitement.
While a precise release date isn't yet available, the feature is currently undergoing testing by Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. Xbox's tweet promises further details on the full rollout later this year. Joining the Xbox Insider program offers early access to this highly anticipated feature.
The return of friend requests signifies a positive step towards enhancing the social experience on Xbox, providing a more controlled and personalized online gaming environment.
