Zomboid Barricading Guide for Enhanced Survival

by Zoey Feb 21,2025

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid requires more than just finding a suitable location; it demands robust defenses. This guide details how to construct essential barricades, starting with the fundamental boarded window.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively barricade a window, you'll need specific items: one wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once gathered, right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Locate hammers and nails in typical places: toolboxes, garages, sheds, closets, etc. Planks are commonly found on construction sites, or salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture (shelves, chairs). Administrators can use the "/additem" command to spawn items.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie entry. Multiple planks increase the time needed for a breach. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." You'll need a claw hammer or crowbar.

Note: Large furniture (bookshelves, refrigerators) cannot be used as effective window barriers; characters and zombies will pass through them.

While stronger barricades are possible using metal bars or sheets (requiring Metalworking skill), boarded windows offer a readily accessible and effective initial defense.
