A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Unlike the plentiful GBA and DS games on Nintendo Switch Online, this list focuses on titles independently released on the Switch eShop. Here are ten standout choices – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version offers a compelling alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, and a generally more accessible experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of version, appealing even to non-shooter fans.
Following the Mega Man X series' console decline, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, while initially somewhat rough around the edges, launches an excellent series. The initial entry is the perfect starting point, with subsequent titles building upon its foundation.
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed, and the game fully commits to this idea. While later entries saw diminishing returns, this initial title offers substantial enjoyment.
From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the fun gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. The unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Originally a cult classic with limited reach, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, ensuring her presence across subsequent console generations. Its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Arguably a GBA game (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigations and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptionally strong, though later installments also hold merit. A compelling entry point to the series.
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick boasts excellent writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, players utilize abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery surrounding their own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without a DS. A highly recommended game regardless of platform.
From the recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from its button controls replacing the original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games within the collection are worth playing.
A franchise that translates well to the Switch, though its original DS/3DS experience remains unparalleled. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a substantial RPG experience.
