Two Frogs Games' Back 2 Back aims to revive couch co-op gaming on mobile phones. Can this ambitious concept succeed?
Couch co-op feels like a nostalgic memory in the age of online multiplayer. Yet, Two Frogs Games believes otherwise, presenting Back 2 Back as a two-player mobile couch co-op experience. Inspired by titles like It Takes Two and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, the game features distinct, switchable roles for each player.
One player drives, navigating a challenging obstacle course filled with cliffs, lava, and more, while the other player acts as a shooter, defending the vehicle from attacking enemies.
A Simple, Yet Questionable, Approach
The viability of a couch co-op mobile game immediately springs to mind. A phone's portability is counteracted by its small screen, already a challenge for single-player games, let alone two.
Two Frogs Games' solution, while not entirely intuitive, uses a shared session where each player controls the game using their own phone. It's a less-than-ideal solution, but functional.
Despite the technical hurdles, I remain optimistic. The enduring appeal of local multiplayer, as evidenced by games like Jackbox, suggests that the enjoyment of playing together in person remains strong.
