Baldur's Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

by Ryan Mar 19,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or leaving the Emperor to handle him. After acquiring the Orphic Hammer in the House of Hope, players can shatter Orpheus's chains. However, this choice significantly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024, by Nahda Nabiilah: Before deciding Orpheus's fate, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin by thoroughly exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. Prepare for challenging interactions requiring a 30 roll to influence companion opinions.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the ending of Baldur's Gate 3.

Should You Free Orpheus?

This decision hinges on player preferences. Early in Act 3, the Emperor warns that Orpheus's imprisonment prevents party members from becoming Illithids. Freeing him risks transforming one or more party members into Mind Flayers.

After failing to defeat the Netherbrain, the Emperor teleports the party to the Astral Prism, presenting the choice: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor

This leads to Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this aids in defeating the Netherbrain, it might displease fans of these characters.

Freeing Orpheus

Freeing Orpheus causes the Emperor to side with the Netherbrain. Again, party members risk becoming Mind Flayers. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. If asked, he'll even become a Mind Flayer to save his people.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus if you accept that risk for yourself or your companions. The former might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The choice depends entirely on player preference.

The Moral Choice?

This depends on individual perspectives, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. Siding with him is natural for a Githyanki, but others might find Voss and Lae'zel's demands excessive. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions affect the wider world.

The Emperor, however, is generally benevolent, aiming to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might turn you into a Mind Flayer, but you'll be a morally upright one. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic play can yield a favorable outcome for everyone.
