Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has arrived, and the player response has been explosive, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.
BG3 Modding: A Phenomenal Success
Following Patch 7's release on September 5th, the modding community exploded. Larian Studios' CEO Swen Vincke tweeted that over one million mods were installed in under 24 hours, declaring modding "pretty big." This was quickly surpassed; ModDB and mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reported over 3 million installs and counting.
Patch 7 introduced significant additions, including new evil endings, improved split-screen, and, crucially, Larian's own built-in Mod Manager. This streamlined tool allows players to seamlessly browse, install, and manage mods without leaving the game.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to craft custom stories using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can also utilize custom scripts, perform basic debugging, and publish directly from the toolkit.
PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus), which unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted editor features. Larian initially limited tool access, with Vincke stating, "We are a game development company, we're not a tools company," while acknowledging players' creative freedom.
Larian aims to support cross-platform modding, a complex undertaking. Vincke explained, "It is not the easiest thing in the world because we have to make it work on consoles and on PC." The PC version will receive priority, with console support following after addressing potential issues.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined experience: improved UI, new animations, expanded dialogue, and numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements. With further updates anticipated, Larian's cross-platform modding plans will likely be further detailed.
