Former Blue Archive Developers Cancel Project KV Amidst Plagiarism Accusations
Dynamis One, a game studio founded by ex-developers of the popular mobile game Blue Archive, has pulled the plug on its upcoming project, Project KV. The decision follows a significant backlash from fans who criticized the game's striking resemblance to its predecessor.
The Cancellation Announcement
On September 9th, Dynamis One issued an apology on Twitter (X), announcing the cancellation of Project KV. The studio acknowledged the controversy surrounding the game's similarities to Blue Archive and expressed regret for the resulting negative reaction. They pledged to avoid similar issues in the future and promised the removal of all Project KV related materials online. The statement concluded with a vow to better meet fan expectations in future endeavors.
The controversy erupted after the release of two promotional videos in August. The initial teaser generated excitement, but the second video, showcasing characters and story elements, fueled comparisons to Blue Archive. The cancellation followed swiftly.
The "Red Archive" Controversy
The formation of Dynamis One in April by former Blue Archive developers, including Park Byeong-Lim, initially raised some eyebrows. However, the unveiling of Project KV ignited a firestorm. Fans quickly noted numerous similarities, from the art style and music to the core premise: a city populated by female students wielding weapons. The presence of a "Master" character, echoing Blue Archive's "Sensei," and the use of halo-like adornments further intensified the criticism.
These halos, a significant narrative element in Blue Archive, became a focal point of the controversy. Their inclusion in Project KV fueled accusations of plagiarism, with many labeling the new project a "Red Archive," a derivative work capitalizing on the success of Blue Archive. The speculation that "KV" was a reference to "Kivotos," the name of Blue Archive's fictional city, added to the negative perception.
While Blue Archive's general producer, Kim Yong-ha, indirectly addressed the controversy by sharing a fan's clarification that Project KV was not a sequel or spin-off, the damage was done.
The Overwhelming Backlash
The overwhelmingly negative response ultimately led to Project KV's cancellation. While some expressed disappointment, many viewed the cancellation as a just consequence of the perceived plagiarism. The future of Dynamis One and its ability to learn from this experience remains to be seen.
