Activision's latest Call of Duty promotion ignites player fury. A recent tweet advertising a new store bundle has drawn intense backlash, amassing over 2 million views and countless critical replies. The community accuses Activision of being tone-deaf to widespread game issues affecting both Warzone and Black Ops 6.
The controversy stems from persistent, unresolved problems plaguing the games, including rampant cheating in Ranked Play, debilitating server issues, and more. This, coupled with Activision's continued focus on promoting microtransactions rather than addressing these core gameplay problems, has pushed many players to the breaking point. Even professional players like Scump have voiced their concern, stating the franchise is in its worst state ever.
Call of Duty's Promotional Tweet Backfires
On January 8th, Activision used the official Call of Duty Twitter account to promote a Squid Game themed store bundle. This promotional effort backfired spectacularly, with players lambasting Activision for failing to prioritize fixing the game's numerous issues. The sentiment was widespread, with prominent figures like FaZe Swagg urging Activision to "read the room," and CharlieIntel highlighting the severe limitations imposed on players by the broken Ranked Play mode. Many players, such as Twitter user Taeskii, have pledged to boycott store purchases until the anti-cheat measures are improved.
Player Exodus on Steam
The negative reaction extends beyond online criticism. Since Black Ops 6's October 2024 launch, Steam player counts have plummeted dramatically. While data for PlayStation and Xbox is unavailable, the over 47% drop in Steam players strongly suggests widespread dissatisfaction with the game's current state, likely fueled by the persistent hacking and server problems. The situation paints a grim picture for the future of the Call of Duty franchise.
