Capcom's Revival of Classic IPs: Okami, Onimusha, and Beyond
Capcom has announced its continued focus on reviving classic intellectual properties (IPs), beginning with the highly anticipated returns of Okami and Onimusha. This strategy aims to leverage Capcom's extensive game library to deliver high-quality content to players.
Okami and Onimusha: A New Dawn
A new Onimusha title is set for release in 2026, transporting players to Edo-era Kyoto. Meanwhile, a new Okami sequel is in development, helmed by members of the original game's development team, though a release date remains unannounced.
Capcom explicitly stated its intention to "re-activate dormant IPs," emphasizing the creation of "highly efficient, high-quality titles" to enhance corporate value. This initiative complements ongoing projects such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both scheduled for a 2025 release. The company also recently launched Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal, demonstrating a continued commitment to new game development alongside these revivals.
Fan Favorites in the Spotlight: Clues from the "Super Elections"
Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections" provided valuable insight into player preferences, revealing strong demand for sequels and remakes of several dormant franchises. Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire were among the most requested titles. While Capcom remains discreet about future projects, the "Super Elections" results, which included Onimusha and Okami, offer compelling hints about potential future releases.
The long dormancy of franchises like Dino Crisis (last installment: 1997) and Darkstalkers (last installment: 2003), along with the short lifespan of Breath of Fire 6 (2016-2017), suggests that these well-established IPs are ripe for a comeback, whether through remasters or new sequels. The success of the Okami and Onimusha revivals will likely heavily influence Capcom's future decisions regarding other dormant IPs.
