Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers

Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors

Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.

This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains intact. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then," Mackie explained. Evans himself reiterated his retirement, stating, "Happily retired." This isn't the first time such rumors have surfaced since Avengers: Endgame.

While Evans has returned to the superhero genre in a smaller, comedic role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his statement firmly closes the door on a significant Captain America return to the main MCU storyline.

The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, from the franchise. Majors' departure, after facing assault and harassment charges, seemingly disrupted Marvel's plans, which previously positioned Kang as the next Thanos-level threat.

With Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., now confirmed as the primary antagonist, speculation about other original Avengers returning has intensified. However, aside from Downey Jr.'s casting, no further returns have been officially confirmed.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, confirmed his absence from Avengers: Doomsday but will feature prominently in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
