Cyberpunk 2077 to Use 25% of Switch 2's Storage

CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the install size for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be 64GB. This size is notably smaller than the 100-110GB required on Xbox or PS5, but for the Switch 2, 64GB represents a significant 25% of its 256GB internal storage. The game is set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, and will be available both as a physical 64GB game card and as a digital download from the Nintendo eShop.

Interestingly, Nintendo has revealed that some new Switch 2 game cards will serve as keys for game downloads rather than containing the actual game. However, this does not apply to Cyberpunk 2077, which will come fully loaded on its game card.

The question arises: how quickly will the internal storage of the Switch 2 fill up? The Switch 2 boasts a significant upgrade from the original Switch's 32GB, but with larger game sizes on the horizon, storage could become a concern. For instance, Cyberpunk 2077 at 64GB dwarfs the original Switch's largest game, Tears of the Kingdom, which was only 16GB. Upcoming titles like the $80 Mario Kart World are expected to demand even more space.

The solution to storage woes is expandable storage. While the PS5 and Xbox support expandable storage, the Switch 2 has taken a different route by adopting microSD Express cards, which are incompatible with the standard microSD cards used by the original Switch. This shift means that existing microSD cards won't work, and users will need to purchase the more expensive microSD Express cards.

IGN's deals team has identified some of the best deals on Switch 2-compatible microSD Express cards, offering options from 128GB ($44.99) to 1TB ($199.99) from brands like SanDisk and Lexar. However, due to high demand, some of these cards are already listed as "temporarily out of stock" on Amazon. Nintendo is also set to release its own branded cards in collaboration with SanDisk and Samsung, which may carry a higher price tag compared to third-party equivalents. As the Switch 2 drives demand for microSD Express cards, more manufacturers might enter the market, potentially affecting prices.
