A recent Destiny 2 update inadvertently wiped out a significant number of players' in-game usernames. This article details the developers' response and outlines steps players can take if their Bungie Name was affected.
Following a recent game update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced. Affected players reported their names changed to "Guardian" followed by a random number string. This issue, which started around August 14th, stemmed from a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie confirmed the problem on Twitter (X), stating, "We're investigating an issue causing numerous account name changes via our moderation tool. Further details, including a free name change token for all players, will be available tomorrow."
Bungie's system typically alters usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same name since 2015.
Bungie swiftly acknowledged the error and launched an investigation. Through subsequent tweets, they confirmed a large-scale impact and announced they'd identified the root cause. A server-side fix was implemented to prevent further occurrences. The developers stated, "The issue causing the mass Bungie name changes has been identified and fixed. We'll distribute free name change tokens to all players in the near future."
While Bungie continues to resolve this unforeseen issue, players are urged to remain patient. Those affected can anticipate receiving a name change token and further updates from Bungie soon.
