The mastermind behind The Sims, Will Wright, recently took to Twitch to shed more light on his innovative AI life simulation game, Proxi, a project developed by his new studio, Gallium Studio. This intriguing game, first hinted at in 2018, is finally taking shape, promising a deeply personal and interactive experience. Let's delve into what Wright revealed.
Wright's Twitch appearance, part of BreakthroughT1D's Dev Diaries series (a channel dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Type 1 diabetes research), provided a fascinating glimpse into Proxi's core mechanics. The game is described as an "AI life sim built from your memories." Players input their real-life memories as text, and the game transforms these narratives into animated scenes. These scenes are then customizable using in-game assets, allowing for a highly personalized recreation of the memory.
Each new memory, termed a "mem," enhances the game's AI, populating the player's "mind world"—a navigable 3D environment of hexagons. As the mind world expands, so too does its population of Proxies, representing friends and family. Memories are freely arranged on a timeline, linked to Proxies to reflect the context and individuals involved. Remarkably, these Proxies are even exportable to other game platforms, such as Minecraft and Roblox!
The overarching goal of Proxi is to create "magical connections with memories, bringing them to life." Wright emphasized the game's deeply personal focus, stating, "I found myself getting continuously closer and closer to the player," adding, "no game designer has ever gone wrong by overestimating the narcissism of their players." He playfully concluded, "The more I can make a game about you, the more you'll like it."
Proxi is now featured on Gallium Studio's official website, with platform announcements expected soon.
