In an insightful interview with Wccftech at Gamescom 2024, the developers of Tides of Annihilation from Eclipse Glow Games shed light on the game's unique concept and future plans. Dive deeper to discover the inspiration behind this intriguing title and what lies ahead.
Eclipse Glow Games, despite their roots in China, have strategically chosen a Western setting for Tides of Annihilation to cater to a broader audience. This decision was influenced by their financial backer, Tencent, who set different expectations for this game compared to their other project, Black Myth: Wukong. "Tencent's investment in Tides of Annihilation was aimed at the Western market, leading us to weave the rich tapestry of Arthurian legends into our narrative," explained the game's producer. The central theme revolves around the legendary knights, specifically King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
Set in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London devastated by an Outworld invasion, Tides of Annihilation follows the journey of Gwendolyn, seemingly the last human survivor. While the game is rooted in a contemporary setting, it seamlessly integrates fantasy elements inspired by the Arthurian myths.
Fans of action-RPGs will recognize the familiar combat style of Tides of Annihilation, which draws heavily from the iconic Devil May Cry series. The developers at Eclipse Glow Games have embraced this influence, stating, "Our combat system is definitely inspired by Devil May Cry, but we've added a difficulty selection feature to make it more accessible." This thoughtful design choice broadens the game's appeal, accommodating both casual and hardcore gamers.
Players can customize their combat experience with four different weapons and over ten Knights of the Round Table to command. Gwendolyn, the protagonist, discovers her ability to summon these legendary figures to aid her in navigating the ruins of London and uncovering the mysteries of the invasion. With more than 30 bosses, each boasting unique abilities, players are in for a thrilling challenge. "Prepare for intense boss battles," the team emphasized.
Eclipse Glow Games has ambitious plans to expand Tides of Annihilation into a broader anthology. They envision future titles exploring different mythologies and settings, each with a new protagonist, while maintaining the core concept of an Outworld invasion. "We hope the success of Tides of Annihilation will pave the way for this expansive anthology," the developers shared optimistically.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative release in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will embark on an epic journey with Gwendolyn as she battles to save not only London but also the mystical realm of Avalon, which intertwines with the real world in this captivating narrative.
