For much of its history, the *Dynasty Warriors* series has been defined by its linear, hack-and-slash gameplay. However, recent entries like *Dynasty Warriors 9* experimented with an open world, raising the question: Does *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* follow suit?
No, *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* does not feature an open world.
The trend in AAA gaming towards open worlds doesn't always equate to quality. *Dynasty Warriors 9*'s open world serves as a prime example; its vast, empty landscape detracted from the experience, making even large-scale battles feel sparse and underwhelming. The open world felt forced, a mechanic grafted onto a game that didn't require it.
Thankfully, *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* avoids this pitfall. Instead of an open world, it offers a condensed overworld map of ancient China. Players navigate this smaller map, traveling between towns to purchase items, rest at inns, and interact with NPCs. These towns are easily traversed, often taking less than a minute to cross. While a fast travel option exists, its necessity is minimal given the map's size. This overworld serves as a hub for side quests, item discovery (like Pyroxene and Old Coins), optional battles for skill improvement, and cutscenes advancing the storyline. This streamlined approach, while perhaps unambitious, is a significant improvement over the emptiness of a large, underutilized open world.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
