The Hollow Knight community has once again plunged into a whirlwind of speculation, sparked by the actions of one of the game's creators, William Pellen, on social media. Just before and during the Switch 2 reveal on January 16, 2025, Pellen's Twitter (X) activity set the fanbase abuzz.

On January 15, Pellen teased the community with a post saying, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow." This cryptic message likely alluded to the much-anticipated reveal of the Switch 2 on January 16. Naturally, this led to rampant speculation about the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. However, it was Pellen’s subsequent actions that truly fueled the fire of speculation.

On the day of the Switch 2 announcement, Pellen changed his Twitter (X) profile picture to a slice of cake. A reverse image search revealed that the image was from a Bon Appetit article about the Brooklyn Blackout Cake, published on April 2, 2024. Pellen's comment on the article, "mmmm tasty," drew the attention of dedicated fans. Some fans even playfully connected the cake to Silksong, with one daring to say, "if we get real silksong news by April 2nd 2025, I will bake this cake." Another fan cleverly linked the "silky texture" of the cake to the game, hinting at a possible announcement during Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 Direct.

While it remains unconfirmed whether Pellen was the one who commented on the cake recipe, his profile picture change is undeniable. It suggests he might be hinting at something, though it could just as well be a playful tease.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Official Announcement Five Years Ago

Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced on February 14, 2019, and was slated for release on multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is a sequel to Hollow Knight and follows the journey of Hornet in a new kingdom dominated by silk and song.

In December 2019, Team Cherry offered a glimpse into Hollow Knight’s enchanting soundtrack, composed by Christopher Larkin. Following this, the development team went quiet for over two years.

The silence was broken in February 2022 when Pellen reassured fans that the game was still in development and promised that more information would be forthcoming as the release date approached. Later that year, in June, Team Cherry unveiled a new trailer at the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, showcasing fresh gameplay and announcing that Silksong would be available on Game Pass upon launch.

Despite expectations of a 2023 release, Team Cherry’s representative Matthew Griffin announced a delay in May 2023. "We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing," Matthew stated. "We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."

Even after more than five years, the Hollow Knight community remains fervently engaged, actively participating in forums and scouring for any tidbits about Silksong. Yet, since the delay announcement, little concrete information has been shared, leaving fans to cling to any signs of progress from the developers.
