Fallout 76 Season 20 introduces a groundbreaking Ghoul transformation feature, allowing players to embrace mutations in Appalachia's irradiated wilderness. Discover the new ghoul gameplay mechanics, abilities, and an exclusive level 50 character boost.
The latest Fallout 76 update lets players experience Appalachia as radiation-mutated Ghouls. Bethesda announced Season 20 "The Ghoul Within" on March 18, bringing ghoul-themed gameplay enhancements, camp customization options, and powerful new abilities.
Players can initiate Ghoulification by completing the "Leap of Faith" questline, unlocking access to hidden areas in the Savage Divide. This transformation grants exclusive Ghoul abilities - Glow and Feral - along with 30 specialized perks unavailable to human characters.
The Feral ability replaces standard hunger/thirst mechanics, providing progressive buffs as the Feral meter fills. At maximum depletion (0%), players receive massive melee damage bonuses (+150%) while suffering severe penalties to endurance, charisma, health points, and combat accuracy.
The Glow ability converts radiation into beneficial effects, granting disease immunity, passive healing, and enhanced health regeneration. These radiation-powered enhancements directly affect the new Ghoul perks (or "Gherks") system, offering 28 standard perks plus 2 legendary perks exclusively for mutated characters.
Ghoulification provides significant advantages in radiation zones but alters faction relationships. The Brotherhood of Steel becomes openly hostile to Ghoul players, potentially blocking certain questlines. However, new NPC Jaye offers faction disguise solutions.
Players can reverse their transformation through the Character Screen, though this requires purchasing Ghoul Retransformation for 1000 Atoms, as the initial quest cannot be repeated. This permanent decision encourages players to carefully consider their mutation path.
The Season 20 update introduces a purchasable Level 50 Character Boost (1500 Atoms), allowing immediate access to endgame activities like Daily Ops and Public Events. This feature helps new players and alts quickly experience multiplayer content.
Alongside Ghoul mechanics, the patch delivers numerous gameplay improvements including combat balancing, weapon adjustments, and accessibility enhancements. Bethesda also teased the April 29 "The Big Bloom" update as part of their seasonal roadmap.
Initially launched in November 2018 to mixed reception, Fallout 76 has evolved significantly through consistent updates. The current Steam "Mostly Positive" rating (76% positive reviews) reflects this transformation. Available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.
