It was, perhaps, inevitable: Rockstar has officially pushed back the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 2026. The announcement came via a brief statement, offering no details about launch platforms, a new trailer, or even a single screenshot.
Fans of Rockstar's games are no strangers to this situation. The legendary studio has a well-known history of delaying its major titles, so this latest setback for GTA 6 isn't entirely shocking. Nonetheless, the community's reaction has been a complex mix of disappointment, reluctant acceptance, and the sobering realization that the internet is now primed for another full year of rampant—and often wildly speculative—GTA 6 discussions.
Following the news, the GTA 6 subreddit—a hub for countless fan theories about the game's trailers and potential launch—erupted with activity.
“Ffs, Fuck Rockstar, at least give us screenshots,” posted MyNameIsToFuOG, echoing the widespread frustration that the delay wasn't accompanied by any new material from the game.
“At least give us a screenshot, this is ridiculous even for R*,” added Abvk0. “We endured a year and a half of silence, only to get a delay announcement with zero new glimpses of the game?”
“At least we have a date now, I don't mind a delay if it means the game is gonna be good,” offered the more philosophical bl00nded.
“It’s Rockstar bro. What did you expect? Also, I really doubt it will release on May 26, they will delay it more,” commented a somewhat apprehensive Puzzleheaded-Hunt731.
The delay to 2026 has also sparked new speculation about a simultaneous PC release alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions. “I hope that means that a PC version is also coming in 2026 and not 2027,” said Kiwibom.
“2026 console release, late 2027 PC release, 2028 new-gen console release,” forecast Velkoadmiral.
IGN's commenters also had strong opinions on the delay. User BSideleau delivered a sharp critique of the current console cycle:
“Surprising no one. It will be a final game of this tepid generation. What a let down. I have never felt more grifted than by Microsoft and Sony this generation. Both consoles are more like 0.5 updates from their predecessors rather than true next-gen machines, yet they expected us to pay a premium. Stop letting them get away with it. Demand better.”
Conversations about GTA 6's potential pricing are also heating up. Following moves by Nintendo and Microsoft to price some titles at $80, many fans are preparing for a similar, if not higher, price tag for GTA 6—possibly reaching $100 if it includes the new version of GTA Online.
In its official statement, Rockstar mentioned that “we look forward to sharing more information with you soon.” Does this hint that the second official trailer is imminent? The fanbase is certainly crossing its fingers.
GTA 6 isn't just anticipated to be the biggest entertainment launch in history; fans are counting on it to be one of the finest games ever created. Under that immense pressure, the developers at Rockstar and parent company Take-Two are undoubtedly determined to deliver a product of the highest quality. From that perspective, this delay feels almost preordained.
