Hyper Light Breaker is a game shrouded in mystery, with many mechanics left for players to discover as they navigate its Synthwave-inspired roguelite world. Among these, the lock-on system stands out as a crucial targeting mechanic. While locking onto a target can help maintain focus on a single enemy, it's not always the best approach. This guide delves into how to effectively target enemies in Hyper Light Breaker and provides insights on when to use the lock-on feature versus the default free camera mode.
To target an enemy in Hyper Light Breaker, align your view with your desired target and press the right analog stick (R3) on your controller. The game will automatically select the correct target, even within crowded enemy groups. Upon locking on, your view will zoom in slightly, and a reticle will encircle your target.
You don't need a direct line of sight to lock onto an enemy; as long as they're visible on-screen and within range, you can engage the lock-on feature. When locked on, your character's movement will adapt to keep the camera focused on the target, which can result in circling movements around the enemy. Be mindful that fast-moving enemies can cause the camera to shift abruptly, potentially altering your character's direction mid-movement.
To switch targets while locked on, simply move the right analog stick left or right. The targeting reticle will then jump to the nearest enemy within range. To revert to the default third-person camera mode, press the right analog stick again. You can also customize this control in the game's settings. If you move too far from your target, the lock-on will automatically disengage.
The decision to lock on or use free cam in Hyper Light Breaker depends heavily on the combat situation. Locking on is advantageous in one-on-one scenarios, such as against bosses or formidable enemies with yellow health bars. However, ensure all other lesser enemies are dealt with first, as the focused camera can leave you vulnerable to attacks from other directions.
In contrast, free cam is generally more effective for most of the game, especially when facing multiple or weaker enemies. Locking on in these situations can restrict your awareness and reaction to surrounding threats.
For instance, when engaging in an Extraction, you'll encounter waves of regular enemies before facing a mini-boss. It's advisable to maintain free cam until you've cleared the regular enemy waves, then lock onto the mini-boss for a focused attack once it's safe to do so. This strategy allows you to manage the battlefield more effectively, switching between lock-on and free cam as needed to handle different combat dynamics.
