Gunn: Superman Key to DCU's Gods and Monsters

by Victoria Nov 27,2025

The DC Cinematic Universe's first phase, led by James Gunn, is now underway, starting with his upcoming Superman movie. Gunn, who also heads the studio, considers this project essential for establishing the overarching narrative of the Gods and Monsters phase.

"It's extremely important," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in a June 19 interview. "While I wouldn't call the animated series Creature Commandos crucial, both Peacemaker and Superman play significant roles in building toward the larger story."

He emphasized the need to balance providing key information and moments for dedicated fans while keeping the content accessible to casual viewers. After all, engaging new audiences without overwhelming them can turn them into long-term fans.

"At the same time, I'm careful to ensure that anyone can jump into the next story without feeling lost. The other projects add depth and context to what you're watching," Gunn explained. "This approach might evolve as the universe expands, similar to how Infinity War sets up Endgame, where watching the former becomes necessary to fully understand the latter."

He added, "For now, I'm structuring it so that you don't need to see Superman to enjoy Supergirl, for instance. While Superman includes elements that lead into Peacemaker, it's not a prerequisite. It enhances the experience, but we also include a 'Previously in the DCU' recap before each TV episode to keep viewers informed."

Gunn's Superman releases in theaters on July 8, with Peacemaker Season 2 following on Max on August 21.
