by Penelope Apr 27,2026

HBO is charging forward with production on its new Harry Potter television series, securing veteran actor John Lithgow as the newly cast Professor Dumbledore.

Reports indicate HBO has been searching for their perfect Dumbledore for months, that search now concluded. Lithgow confirmed his casting during a ScreenRant interview, describing how the iconic role will shape his professional legacy.

"The offer completely surprised me," Lithgow revealed. "I received the call while attending Sundance Film Festival for another project. It wasn't an easy decision - this role will likely define the final chapter of my career."

The acclaimed actor added, "But I'm truly excited. Remarkable creatives are returning to the Harry Potter universe. That's what made this so challenging. I'll be pushing 87 by the wrap party, but here we are - I've accepted."

While Lithgow's confirmation marks the first casting news, HBO and Warner Bros. have yet to officially announce his involvement.

The premium network plans to faithfully adapt J.K. Rowling's entire book series with fresh faces portraying beloved characters including the golden trio - Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Rowling will executive produce alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.

Though Lithgow has verbally accepted, the series' incomplete cast suggests production remains distant. The versatile actor boasts an impressive career spanning film and television, from his Emmy-winning role in 3rd Rock from the Sun to his critically-acclaimed portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crown's debut season.
