Suikoden is back, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, slated for release later this year. This free-to-play title marks a return for the beloved franchise, absent from the scene since 2012.
For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, born in 1995, is a collection of RPGs developed and published by Konami, the brainchild of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series weaves tales of political intrigue, True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven entries, including spin-offs, have graced gaming consoles over the years. Now, instead of a direct sequel, Konami offers Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile experience.
What Awaits?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while retaining the series' signature gathering of 108 heroes. Maintaining the classic Suikoden aesthetic, the game features charming pixel art. Take a peek:
The story centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, is thrust into a journey after a devastating attack on his home. Joined by Hisui (his servant with a mysterious past), Shirin (his childhood friend), and Shapur (a former general turned butler), Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace.
While excitement is palpable, some within the community express reservations. Longtime fans, yearning for a true continuation of the series, may find the gacha-style gameplay of STAR LEAP a departure from their expectations.
Further details await the game's official launch. For the latest updates, visit the official website.
