Hasbro has unveiled plans to expand the beloved card game, Magic: The Gathering, into a multimedia franchise spanning movies and TV shows. Partnering with Legendary Entertainment, the focus will initially be on a feature film as part of a larger shared universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Entertainment, known for its work on films like Dune and the Godzilla series including Godzilla vs. Kong, as well as Detective Pikachu, is enthusiastic about bringing Magic: The Gathering to life on screen. "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," stated Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production.
While details remain somewhat unclear, it appears that Legendary's movie and TV projects may be separate from the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set for Netflix. However, it's possible that the animated series could now be integrated into this expansive shared universe.
Magic: The Gathering, created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, has evolved into one of the world's most popular trading card games. Wizards of the Coast became a part of Hasbro in 1999.
Hasbro has a track record of successfully adapting its properties into films, with notable examples including G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons. The company is currently developing several new projects, such as additional G.I. Joe films, a new Power Rangers movie, and a Beyblade film.
