Nexus Mods, a popular modding site, finds itself at the center of a heated controversy after removing over 500 user-created modifications for the game Marvel Rivals within a single month. The catalyst? Mods that replaced Captain America's head with images of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
The platform's owner, known as TheDarkOne, addressed the situation in a private Reddit discussion. He clarified that both the Biden and Trump mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of partisan favoritism. TheDarkOne noted a curious silence from YouTube commentators regarding this simultaneous removal.
The fallout, however, extended beyond online debate. TheDarkOne revealed that the removal sparked a wave of harassment, including death threats and accusations of pedophilia.
This isn't a new phenomenon for Nexus Mods. A similar incident occurred in 2022 when a mod for Spider-Man Remastered, which replaced rainbow flags with American flags, was removed. At that time, the site's leadership openly defended its commitment to inclusivity and its policy of removing content deemed discriminatory.
TheDarkOne concluded by stating that Nexus Mods will not engage with those who object to its policies.
