In the expansive universe of *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, where you're often pitted against hordes of nameless enemies, duels stand out as a thrilling return from earlier titles. Here's a detailed look at how duels work in this latest installment.
Duels, a feature that first graced *Dynasty Warriors 4*, have made a comeback in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* after more than two decades. Initially, you won't have access to duels until you reach Chapter 2. When the opportunity arises, you'll be able to challenge only high-ranking and prominent enemy officers. The moment they appear on the battlefield, you can initiate a duel by simultaneously pressing the R1 and L1 buttons, but you must act quickly as the window for initiating a duel is brief.
Once a duel begins, an arena forms around you, isolating you for a one-on-one confrontation with the enemy officer. Unlike standard combat, a duel features a unique mechanic: a bar at the top of the screen displays the status of both combatants. Each successful hit you land on your opponent pushes your portion of the bar forward, while their hits push theirs. The objective is to fill the bar completely with your color by damaging your opponent. It's important to note that your health doesn't influence your starting position in the duel; instead, it's your overall morale that plays a crucial role. If you're in the lead, your bar will start more filled; if you're losing, your opponent's will. In a balanced fight, the bar will be evenly split.
During the duel, strategic gameplay is key. You must closely observe your opponent's movements, dodge, parry effectively, and maintain a safe distance, especially if they're about to use a Battle Art. Remember, time is limited, but rushing in recklessly can be detrimental.
Winning a duel in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* grants you the ability to deal massive damage to your opponent and boosts your morale significantly. However, losing a duel results in substantial damage to yourself and a severe drop in your army's morale, which could be catastrophic in the late stages of a battle. If neither side wins decisively, both combatants simply disengage, and the battle continues without penalty. There are also inescapable duels where losing leads to an automatic mission failure, but winning ensures a swift victory in the battle. Thus, initiating a duel can dramatically shift the tide of battle, but underestimating your opponent can lead to dire consequences.
That's the essence of dueling in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
