MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

by Finn Mar 15,2025

Player First Games announced the bittersweet news that MultiVersus Season 5 will be its last, bringing the curtain down on the Warner Bros. platform fighter on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio detailed the discontinuation of support in a blog post on their website. Launched on May 28, 2024, MultiVersus will enter its final season, Season 5, on February 4th, concluding its run in May 2025. Online play will cease at that time, but players will retain access to all earned and purchased content offline via local and training modes.

The MultiVersus team expressed their gratitude: “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Real-money transactions are no longer available, but Gleamium and character tokens can still be used to access in-game content until May 30th. The game will also be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

This closure follows reports of MultiVersus underperforming significantly for Warner Bros. Discovery, resulting in a substantial $100 million writedown, contributing to a larger $300 million writedown in their games sector. This followed the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January and the recent departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad. As CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels stated during a November financial call, "We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline.”

Despite the shutdown, Season 5 promises a strong finish. Alongside typical seasonal updates, new playable characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will join the roster. Lola Bunny will be unlockable via a daily calendar reward, while Aquaman will be available through the battle pass, both launching next week.
