by Allison Apr 09,2025

Ever since the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, fans have been buzzing with excitement over a small yet intriguing detail from the trailer: the Joy-Cons. Speculation ran rampant about their potential use as mouse controllers, similar to those on a PC, based on their movements in the footage. Now, we have the official word: the Joy-Cons indeed feature a "mouse mode." This innovative feature allows players to glide the Joy-Cons across flat surfaces, using the analog sticks to mimic left-click and right-click actions, just like a traditional mouse. What's more, players can utilize two Joy-Cons in mouse mode simultaneously, one in each hand, or mix it up with one in standard mode and the other in mouse mode, opening up a world of versatile gaming experiences.

The Nintendo stream showcased the Joy-Con's mouse mode capabilities through an exciting sports game reminiscent of Rocket League, titled "Drag and Drive." This three-on-three basketball game features robot characters maneuvering in wheelchair-style vehicles. Players control their characters using two Joy-Con controllers in mouse mode, navigating the levels to score baskets.

The Joy-Con's mouse mode sparked intense speculation following the reveal trailer, where the controllers were seen sliding around like PC mice. In an attempt to uncover more details, we reached out to Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, but received a cryptic response. This feature, along with the new C button, has fueled extensive discussions about the Nintendo Switch 2 over the past month. It serves as a compelling counterargument to those who felt the console was playing it "safe," highlighting Nintendo's continued commitment to innovation and adventure in gaming.
