The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer opens with a striking visual transformation, showcasing a console that is noticeably larger than its predecessor. As the iconic Joy-Con controllers detach from the original Switch, the tablet section expands and evolves into a more robust form. This significant size increase indicates that Nintendo is steering further away from the compact handheld devices of its past, aligning more closely with the trend of larger portable gaming devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
While Nintendo has not yet disclosed the exact dimensions of the Switch 2, we can estimate its size based on the trailer and a recent hands-on experience with a Switch 2 mock-up at CES 2025, crafted by peripheral designer Genki. This mock-up, which closely mirrors the design seen in Nintendo's trailer, provides a valuable reference point for our size estimates.
Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement refers to the diagonal size of the display (excluding the bezels), which aligns with earlier rumors from 2024. We anticipate the display to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. This substantial increase could enhance the gaming experience, provided the display technology meets high standards.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's display would be 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 would be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.
In the current landscape of portable gaming, the Switch 2's screen size would surpass even the largest Steam Deck screen. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED feature 7-inch and 7.4-inch displays, respectively, with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The Switch 2's 8-inch screen would be 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED's display.
The larger screen naturally results in a bigger console overall. The original Switch already required spacious pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely necessitate even larger pockets or a bag for portability.
Measurements taken from the Genki mock-up at CES suggest that the **Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**, including the Joy-Cons. This would make the Switch 2 **25% larger** than the original Switch, which measures 239mm long and 102mm tall.
In comparison, the Switch 2 would be about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). While we couldn't measure the depth precisely, it appears to be similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness.
The reveal trailer's transformation animation indicates that the Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2 will maintain a similar width to the original but will be slightly taller. Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**, making them **13% larger** than the original Joy-Cons.
By subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate that the **Switch 2 screen unit is 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This represents a **31% increase** over the original Switch's screen unit.
This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen with an approximate 11mm bezel on either side and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom. These bezels are slimmer on the sides compared to the original Switch, while maintaining similar dimensions at the top and bottom.
Please note that these measurements are estimates based on our analysis and may differ from the official dimensions once released by Nintendo. However, our experience with the Genki mock-up gives us confidence in these approximations. We anticipate that the Switch 2 will be approximately 25% larger than the original Switch when we get our hands on it later this year.
