PlayStation's Greatest Hits Now on Switch

by Zoey Jan 07,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to a dwindling supply of retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, resulting in a legendary game catalog that continues to see re-releases. While these titles may have initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, today everyone can enjoy them across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let's dive into the PlayStation showcase!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa is a fantastic platformer that deserves more recognition than it received. A standout 2.5D title, players control a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a menacing threat. The game boasts vibrant visuals, responsive controls, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the sequel (originally on PlayStation 2) falls slightly short, both titles are essential additions to any collection.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's most successful game and propelling the PlayStation to the forefront of the gaming industry. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygon limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation cornerstone, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, offering a thrilling, action-packed adventure less focused on philosophical themes. The gameplay itself is highly enjoyable, and fans can also explore the PlayStation 2 sequels on the Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's explore a more niche title. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm is undeniable. The vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While I could easily fill this list with Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII to showcase other gems. Chrono Cross, tasked with following up one of the most beloved JRPGs ever, may not quite reach the same heights. However, it stands on its own merits as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I enjoy most Mega Man games, nostalgia clouds my judgment. For non-fans, I recommend only a select few from each series. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 boasts superior cohesion compared to its predecessors. While subsequent entries faltered, X4 offers a balanced experience. Explore the Legacy Collections to form your own opinion!

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many first-party titles it didn't own. Tomba! is a captivating platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the same mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, its initial accessibility belies a challenging experience. Its resurgence is welcome news.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port served as the basis for this HD release. Grandia, developed by many Lunar creators, embodies a similar spirit. In contrast to the prevalent Evangelion-inspired RPGs, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system. The collection's second game is also worthy of attention.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft, a PlayStation icon, starred in five adventures on the console. While quality varied, the original is arguably the strongest, prioritizing tomb raiding over action. This remaster allows players to experience the first three games and decide for themselves.

moon ($18.99)

This Japanese-exclusive title deconstructs the traditional RPG, functioning more as an adventure game with a unique, almost punk-like aesthetic. While not consistently enjoyable, its unconventional approach and underlying message are intriguing. Its English release is a significant event.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games available on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments! Thank you for following this series.
