Next Pokemon Presents Event May Be Disappointing for Switch 2

Pokemon Presents on February 27th: No Switch 2 Announcements Expected

Don't expect any reveals about upcoming Pokémon titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 during the February 27th Pokémon Presents. While leaks suggest an imminent Switch 2 unveiling, Pokémon games will reportedly remain exclusive to the original Switch console for the foreseeable future. The focus of the upcoming presentation will likely be on Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

The existence of the Switch 2 has been confirmed by Nintendo, albeit without official details. Leaks paint a picture of a more powerful, larger iteration of the original Switch, boasting backward compatibility. While future Pokémon games are certain to grace the Switch 2, the February 27th event will seemingly showcase titles developed for the original Switch. This is according to industry insider Jeff Grubb, who notes that backward compatibility ensures these games will also run on the new console.

Pokémon Presents: What to Expect

The February 27th Pokémon Presents will undoubtedly feature updates on ongoing live-service titles like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Trading Card Game Live. Significant attention is anticipated for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for release on the original Switch later this year. While a teaser trailer revealed the Lumiose City setting, returning Pokémon, and the return of Mega Evolutions, much remains undisclosed. Rumors also point to another mainline Pokémon game launching this year, separate from Legends: Z-A and Generation 10.

Speculation suggests potential remakes of Pokémon Black and White, or a new Let's Go installment. These, if the leaks prove accurate, will also be released for the original Switch. This suggests that Generation 10 titles may be the first major Pokémon releases exclusive to the Switch 2.

This strategy aligns with the franchise's history of prioritizing consoles with larger install bases. Recall that Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 launched on the original DS rather than the 3DS. However, until official confirmation, fans will have to wait for the February 27th Pokémon Presents to know for sure.
