The Pokémon Company has confirmed it currently has no plans to integrate Pokémon TCG Pocket into its competitive esports circuit. This decision, revealed by Chris Brown, Director of eSports, during a February 25, 2025 interview with VGC, leaves the future of the mobile game in competitive play uncertain. While Brown stated they continually assess potential titles for competitive inclusion, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently on the roster. He humorously referenced Pokémon Sleep's unlikely competitive prospects, highlighting the company's playful approach while emphasizing the lack of current plans for Pokémon TCG Pocket's competitive integration.
While no official reasons have been given, fan speculation points towards the game's relative youth (only four months old with two sets released since its October 2024 launch) and ongoing balancing issues. Although in-app competitive features exist, the game's simplified mechanics, designed for a wider, more casual audience, differ significantly from the original Pokémon TCG's complexity, making a direct competitive transition less straightforward. The current focus appears to be on refining the game's balance before considering competitive integration.
Despite this, the Pokémon Competitive Circuit remains robust, featuring Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite at the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in August 2025 in Anaheim, California. The upcoming Pokémon Presents livestream on February 27, 2025, might offer clues about Pokémon TCG Pocket's future. With the recent release of the Space Time Smackdown set on January 30, 2025, a new set announcement is anticipated. While the livestream's content remains unconfirmed, fans speculate about significant announcements, including updates on the previously announced Pokémon Legends: Z-A and newly revealed Mega Evolutions. The event could shed light on the company's overall strategy and future plans for its various games. The livestream will be available on YouTube and Twitch at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET.
