Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire Cars

by Chloe Apr 02,2025

The expansive world of Project Zomboid offers players a vast map to explore, but trekking from one end to the other is more suited for challenge runs than everyday gameplay. Fortunately, the game includes functional cars, which you can drive even if you can't find the keys—just hotwire them instead.

Hotwiring a car in Project Zomboid is straightforward and doesn't demand the best build, but it does come with specific requirements. Understanding these can transform your gameplay by giving you easy access to transportation.

How Does Hotwiring Work in Project Zomboid?

Project Zomboid Car Hotwiring

Hotwiring a car allows you to drive it indefinitely, provided it remains fueled and well-maintained, even without the keys. To hotwire a vehicle, you must reach at least Level 1 in Electrical and Level 2 in Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar occupation at the start bypasses these skill requirements, enabling you to hotwire cars from the get-go.

How to Hotwire a Car in Project Zomboid

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Open the vehicle radial menu (default key is V).
  3. Select the Hotwire option and wait for a few seconds.

Once you meet the skill or occupation requirements, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automatic; after completion, press W to start the engine. Remember, not all vehicles will have fuel, so having a gas supply in Project Zomboid is crucial.

How to Level Electrical and Mechanical Skills

If you choose not to start as a Burglar, you can boost your Electrical and Mechanical skills through in-game activities:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics like digital watches, radios, and televisions to gain XP.
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts to increase your skill level.

Reading books and magazines found while exploring homes and businesses also helps elevate your skills. Check mailboxes, storage sheds, and bookshelves for these resources. If you're an admin hosting a Project Zomboid server, you can directly add skill XP using the "/addxp" command in the chat box.

For dismantling or installing components, you'll need tools like a screwdriver. To work on a vehicle, right-click on a part and select the Vehicle Mechanics option.
